It was announced at the San Diego Comic-Con that Leonard Nimoy will reprise his role as Spock in Star Trek XI. Also, it was announced that Zachary Quinto, from the show Heroes, will play the young Spock in the film. JJ Abrams also shared that Shatner will be in the film even though the young Kirk had not been cast. The movie will be released Christmas 2008.

Scotty's Ashes Recovered

After a failed launch into space on April 28th, James Doohan's ashes and those of 200 others spent 4 minutes in space and then fell back to Earth over New Mexico. Luckily, the remains were recovered on Friday from the San Andres Mountains on White Sands Missile Range. Sadly, the cylinders containing the ashes will now only be mounted on plaques mentioning the space flight and given to the families who provided them. So good ol' Scotty won't spend eternity in space after all.

As announced back in July 21, 2005, James Doohan's ashes will finally be blasted into space later this month. Apparently he'll be going up in a rocket whose sole purpose is to blast some folks into space.

Starship Enterprise NCC-1701-D
The 78-inch long model of the "Starship Enterprise NCC-1701-D" that was used in the filming of Star Trek: The Next Generation was sold for $576,000 this weekend at Christie's "40 Years of Star Trek" auction. Geeks with cash from all over the world spent more than $4.9 million for set furniture, pointy Vulcan ears and other props from the Paramount lot. The moral of this story is that Star Trek fans apparently have a *lot* of disposable income.

Shatner Refuses Free Space Trip

| Comments (0) | Music, TV, & Film | Tag(s): star trek, william shatner
William Shatner has refused a free space trip on the inaugural flight of Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic in 2008. Coincidentally, the ship will be named the VSS Enterprise, as a tribute to "Star Trek." Shatner was quoted by The Sun as saying, "I'm interested in man's march into the unknown but to vomit in space is not my idea of a good time. Neither is a fiery crash with the vomit hovering over me." Kirk is apparently turning into a pussy in his old age. Of course, he'll look like a genius if the inaugural flight does turn into a pyrotechnic display.

Star Trek XI

Star Trek XI Poster The movie poster for the upcoming Star Trek XI film (pictured here) was released yesterday to much fanfare, from fanboys like myself. For those of you that don't know, J.J. Abrams, of Alias and Mission Impossible III fame, will be producing this next edition of the Star Trek series. The film will be scheduled for release in 2008.

Rumor has it that the next film will focus on the lives of a young Kirk and Spock at Star Fleet Academy as they head out on their first mission. This has many fans worried that the film could devolve into "Star Trek 90210," but that is less likely with someone like Abrams at the helm. The cast for the film has not been finalized as of this writing and many fans are carefully watching the industry press to see who they cast for these iconic young Kirk, Spock, and McCoy roles.

There's a high degree of difficulty in making a prequel to the original series. Still, the idea of a prequel is very exciting. Stay tuned.

Be That Klingon You Always Wanted

Subdermal Implants Subdermal implants allow you to get Klingon-like forehead ridges, or horns, or whatever else your crazy ass desires. In the extreme body modification community, this is the holy grail. The article has said that some "artists" have combined the implants with tattoos to get "beautiful or terrible effects." To install them the practitioner uses a scalpel to place molded silicon or implant grade Teflon under the skin. The bottom line is that this procedure is a small surgery and tattoo artists are not medically trained surgeons. One slip of the scalpel and you are irreparably scarred for life. Hey, but looking like a Klingon is worth it, right?

In a fitting end to a man who was the engineer on the Starship Enterprise, a few grams of James Doohan's ashes will be blasted into space later this year. The ashes will be placed inside an aluminum capsule which will burn up upon re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere.

James Doohan as Montgomery Scott, 1968 James Doohan, the actor that played engineer Montgomery Scott in the original Star Trek series, died earlier today of pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease. His famous line, "She can't take much more of this cap'n, she's about to blow!", is part of American pop culture and acted out by many, accent and all, whenever a machine is being pushed to its limits. An engineer for the ages, he will be missed.

Enterprise Finale Suckiest Ever

| Comments (1) | Music, TV, & Film | Tag(s): star trek
I just watched the Star Trek Enterprise series finale and I am completely shocked as to how much it sucked. Star Trek usually comes through on the finales, whether they be season or series finales. But this time they completely fucked everything up. I am glad that there won't be another series for a while and it will give the creative people on the show a chance to enjoy a much needed retirement.

The episode leading into the finale was the conclusion of the "Terra Prime" storyline. This was an entertaining episode that saw both Trip and T'Pol dealing with the fact that someone had cloned a Vulcan-Human Hybrid using their DNA, essentially creating their daughter. The drama helped develop their characters and their love for each other. Good character development is what has been missing from the show and it seemed that finally we were getting somewhere.

Star Trek Enterprise Mirror Episode

| Comments (0) | Music, TV, & Film | Tag(s): star trek
Yesterday's Star Trek Enterprise episode titled "In a Mirror, Darkly" was a ripoff of the very popular "Mirror, Mirror" episode from the Original Series. This is really sad. The series has only a few episodes left and they can't really come up with an original idea. Maybe they'll have Q make an appearance before it's all over. Lame.

Star Trek XI News

Erik Jendresen, writer for the next Star Trek film broke silence yesterday and gave some news about the new film. The story of the film will take place approximately 160 BK, or about 160 years before Kirk. However, the film will not feature anyone from the Enterprise series cast.

Instead of focusing the action around an Enterprise crew, the story will center around the Romulans attempting to start a war with Earth. Jendresen also hinted that by the end of his film, "everything isn't fine." Good, we need some change. Unfortunately we'll have to wait a while since it isn't going to be ready for release until 2007.
Star Trek: Enterprise has been cancelled. Somehow, it seems that they are canceling the series at its high point, since the last few episodes detailing the birth of the Federation of Planets has been highly entertaining and some of the best Enterprise episodes to date. Still, even die-hard Star Trek fans will admit that the tour de force that yielded the last two episodes did little to erase the last four years of mediocrity that the series had endured.

Not since the end of Star Trek: The Original Series have we seen a time where there wasn't a Star Trek television or film project in at least pre-production. The Paramount lot has had a Star Trek production somewhere on its lot since 1977, when construction of the sets for Star Trek: The Motion Picture began. Ultimately though, I find it hard to believe that Viacom, Paramount's parent company, will abandon the Star Trek franchise completely. Alas this is just a hiatus and not the end--by a long shot.

Luckily for Sci-Fi loyalists there is a new series in town, Battlestar Galactica. Thankfully, this isn't the Battlestar Galactica that many of us remember, with Dirk Benedict smoking cigars and acting like an ass. The old series did not have the gravitas needed for it ever to be taken seriously. The crew used to sit around and drink Ambrosia all while playing slap-ass with each other and the beautiful female members of the crew. It was very seventies. You never got the sense that the Cylons were a real threat and the humor took away from the series.

This new Battlestar series is different.

The first episode of the new series was titled "33." It portrayed the crew of Galactica dealing with the fact that they were being attacked by Cylons every 33 minutes. Since escaping the Cylon attack on their homeworld, Caprica, they had been jumping into hyperspace to every 33 minutes for five days to escape from them. The Cylons' relentless attack did not cease. In short, the members of the crew either did not sleep or get proper sleep for a long time and they were starting to crack from sleep deprivation. In my opinion, this was one of the best pieces of Sci-Fi I have ever seen. The human drama was real, the technology did not get in the way of the storyline, and it just worked. The episode had great writing and even better acting from the cast, led by Edward James Olmos.

I know that there are a lot of Trekkies and Scapers out there that were hoping for a new original show that would fill the void, well this is it. Even though it is a remake of an old show, enough things have been changed to make it original and fresh. If you haven't seen the show yet you should definitely check it out, you won't be disappointed.

Angioplasty, Make It So!

I have to admit that my heart skipped a beat when I saw Patrick Stewart's name in a news headline. Thankfully, he's not dead, he just underwent an angioplasty procedure earlier this week. Phew! Jean Luc Picard and Professor X live on.

Jeri Ryan Divorce Fireworks

| Comments (4) | Politics | Tag(s): jeri ryan, star trek
Jeri Ryan, better known as to Star Trek fans as 7 of 9 on Star Trek Voyager, filed court documents in which she charged her ex-husband, Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Illinois, Jack Ryan, with attempting to force her have sex with him in public at "sex clubs."

The documents were filed in 2000 and have now been unsealed due to Jack Ryan's bid for the Senate. The documents charge that on three separate occasions her then-husband took her on "surprise trips" to New Orleans, New York and Paris. On the second trip, her husband wanted to have sex with her in the club but she refused.

Scandalous shit! I am sure this will have an effect on his bid for the Senate. Because as we all know, America can accept guns, explosions, dismemberment, terrorism, and fear, but not anything other than puritanical missionary position sex between a man and a woman. He would have been better off stabbing somebody. Jack Ryan is fucked!

Star Trek Still Sucks

A national article was published today on Star Trek's problems and proposed changes on making the show better. Fan disappointment with the Trek franchise has reached critical mass (see previous blog) and a lot of people are pissed. Some people are saying that the changes made in this third season of Enterprise are too little too late. I disagree, I think the first couple of shows in this season have been outstanding (see previous blog) and everything seems to be heading in the right direction. Alas, Trek is *not* better than Farscape, but at least they are making new shows.

Star Trek Steps Up

| Comments (1) | Geek Out | Tag(s): star trek
Well, it seems that Star Trek: Enterprise producers listened to the fans and decided to make an amazing season opener to try and quell the detractors of the show. I can say that tonight's episode is a step in the right direction.

Right off the bat, there are a bunch of new aliens introduced as part of a strange Xindi War Council. There's a cockroach looking guy, a bunch of strange humanoids, and even an aquatic species that look like eels. We later find out that the Xindi consist of five different species. It looks like the Delphic Expanse is going to prove to be a pretty interesting place indeed.

Trip is trippin' because of the death of his sister and having nightmares, so the doctor and T'pol conspire to give him what appears to be a Vulcan sensual massage. In the process, T'Pol and Trip take their tops off and T'pol even shows the side of her boob. T'Pol claimed it wasn't sexual, but damn! Look for a relationship to start between these two sometime soon--you heard it here first.

The story included a Star Wars-like plot element and the threat of a weapon capable of destroying an entire planet, uh, can we say Death Star. The new tensions and plot elements have the makings of a very promising season. Looks like the producers have managed to convince me to tune in next week!

Star Trek Sucks

Okay, there I said it and it feels like a heavy weight has been lifted. Yes, admission is the first step to recovery. But, in order for a full recovery to take place, something drastic needs to happen to make the franchise exciting and fresh again. The star, in Star Trek, is falling and someone needs to catch it.

I have felt this way for some time, but I was in complete denial. I didn't want to admit that I don't really like the current series, Enterprise, that the last movie, Nemesis, was good but not great, and that Farscape reruns, are ten times better than anything Trek has done since the finale of The Next Generation and a couple of standout Voyager episodes.

What pushed me over the edge!? Well, I just read an article in Entertainment Weekly titled Fallen Star that pretty much summarized everything that I had been feeling about Trek for the last couple of years. In addition, the article has several suggestions on how to make the series better, which gave me some hope. Hey, Rick Berman, you listening!? Here are some of the suggestions:

Klingon Wanted

A county hospital in Oregon seeks a Klingon-English interpreter to communicate with some of the mental health patients that refuse to speak anything else. I thought this was fake when I first read about it, but lo and behold it was picked up by the Associated Press and got on CNN. That's what happens when geeks snap, so don't push them over the edge or they'll go Klingon on your ass--Kling Kling, Aaargh!

Proof of Pentagon Alliance with Klingon Empire

I almost fell out of my chair laughing at the implication that Larry O'Brien made in yesterday's blog entry. But, it's pretty hard to deny the clues. The formerly top secret stealth jet unveiled earlier this month boasts a cloaking device, bent wings, and it's even called the Bird of Prey. It is only a matter of time before we are all exposed to Klingon Culture.
