I Hate Crowds, But Like People

| Comments (0) | San Francisco | Tag(s): conventions, oracle, soma
Yes, ironic, I know. Oracle OpenWorld is here and that means tons of people taking over my backyard, Yerba Buena Gardens, tons of crowds on the sidewalks, and snarling traffic jams for blocks as people try to maneuver around the closure on Howard Street. Howard Street will again be closed for 9 days between 3rd and 4th Streets from November 8th through 17th to accommodate the conference. Why does the city put up with this? The Oracle conference, with over 45,000 attendees, pumps $80 million into the local economy. I guess I can let people use my backyard for a few weeks.

MySpace in SoMa

MySpace just opened new offices in SoMa to try and attract better engineers. I guess that someone forgot to tell Rupert Murdoch that it's not 1999 anymore. You are late to the party old man! Many software engineers simply left San Francisco in 2000 and while few have come back, it's not the same as it was prior to the dot-com bust. Besides, there are much better Web 2.0 companies in San Francisco for software developers to work at than CrapSpace, er, MySpace.

Big Ass SoMa Fire Too Close for Comfort

Clara Street Fire
There was a huge fire on the corner of Clara and 5th Streets, only one half block away from our building, earlier today. The photo you see here was taken from my cell phone standing on the roof of our building. The building that was on fire, see smoke and firemen with ladders, was only about 150 yards away. I was on a conference call when the fire was in full swing and couldn't even hear the commotion from our place. Melissa called me on the phone to tell me about it and I went on the roof to check it out. Here's the story of the blaze from SFGate, it has much better pictures.
