Big Island Suffers Daily Double

| Comments (1) | News | Tag(s): friends, hawaii
Hours after a moderate 5.4 magnitude earthquake centered 25 miles south of Hilo, the Big Island of Hawaii prepared to be hit by hurricane Flossie. Yeah, that's not a typo. It sounds like the name of a dental floss mascot of some kind, but it's a hurricane. Nothing like a little shake and rain on the same day. I sure hope that our friends Larry and Tina are doing okay.

A Japanese billionaire has selected the first four of eight Native Hawaiian families that will each rent one of his multimillion-dollar homes in the exclusive oceanside Kahala area for $150 per month. The furnished Kahala Avenue homes were purchased in 2005 for $2 million to $3.4 million each. Nice.

I just talked to Larry on the phone after trying to dial in for a couple of hours. He says that the earthquake broke a bunch of stuff inside his house, knocked out the power and water, and closed the "highway" near his house due to landslides. Luckily, they are all okay and there doesn't appear to be any structural damage to the house. Still, he says there is a bit of cleanup to do.

We hope our friends Larry and Tina are okay after this morning's 6.6 magnitude earthquake in Hawaii. The earthquake was 10 miles north-northwest of Kailua Kona, which puts the epicenter within five miles offshore from where our friends live. We have tried calling them but keep getting "all circuits are busy." According to reports, some power lines and phone lines are down on the island. Stay tuned.

Melissa and I are back from Hawaii and the photos are posted on Flickr for everyone to check out. We did a lot of snorkeling, scuba diving, went to South Point, saw the sunset from the top of Mauna Kea, and even saw the start of the Iron Man World Championships. The icing on the cake is a great DVD shot by our friend Larry during our Manta Ray Night Dive. It was awesome.
