My Car's First Dent

| Comments (2) | Fabian's Stuff | Tag(s): biking, cars
I never thought that my first dent would happen while I was completely stopped. Today, I came to a complete stop on Kearny Street at Bush Street waiting for the light when I hear a loud thud of something hitting my car. I look in my rear view mirror and don't see a car, so I immediately look over my right shoulder to see several bystanders helping a bike messenger up from the floor to the right of my car.

This guy hit my car so hard that we was visibly shaken. I had time to pull over to the right of the road and park the car with the hazards on and he still wasn't up. When he finally stood up, he didn't even remember hitting my car. A lady that saw the whole thing said that he started swerving before he hit the car and that it looked like he was passing out before he hit me.

So after the guy is up he's like thanks for getting me up and helping me and he was you know, saying goodbyes as if he was getting ready to leave. So I said, "you are not getting on that bike without me knocking you off of it, so I suggest you don't do it." He just looked at me a little goofy and I realized he was still a little out of it so I cut him a break. I had to explain "you passed out on your bike, fell over, and hit my car leaving a pretty big dent and scratch. I need your driver's license."

He said he didn't have one but he had a California ID. Not a good sign, but okay. I asked him who he worked for and he gave me a form with the name of his company on it. He gave me his cell number, which I called in his presence to make sure it rang. I asked him point blank if he was drunk, or high. He seemed insulted, like he almost didn't know he was a bike messenger and they are all a bunch of druggie losers. Duh!? For the most part this guy was on the up and up.

I asked him if he had a second form of ID and he claimed he didn't have one. At this point I was pissed because I saw a Visa logo as he flipped through his wallet for his ID. I told him I had seen the Visa logo and that he better hand it over before I took it from him. Apparently, I must have been pretty angry, because he handed me his whole wallet. At that point I took the form he gave me and wrote down all his info. Including the card number, expiration, and CVV code. Technically, I could fix my car with his card!

But, that wouldn't be right, or fair. I don't know why he hit my car, but my guess is he passed out from dehydration or exhaustion. I am going to try and call the company he works for to see if their insurance will cover it. Otherwise, my new best friend will pay. Oh, and he will pay. At this point, I know where he lives, where he works, and have enough information to open my own credit in his name.

Still I was lucky. Most people hit by bike messengers get their cars scratched and dented and the guy just keeps riding away never to be seen again. I guess I was lucky he was sort of knocked out and confused after he hit me or this could have been a different story. The good news is these guys are crazy skinny and easily intimidated by a pissed off 190-pound Puerto Rican. Now, just wish me luck in the "getting someone to pay for my car" saga.

Pacifica, Yeah I'm Not Kidding

Yesterday we did the Hawk Hill ride again. A couple of homies from work--Chad and Curt--joined Owen and I on what is becoming a weekly event. This time, we changed up the ride by taking the fire road down instead of taking the hairy one-way paved road on the other side. It was nice to show my bike a little dirt--it's been a while. I'd forgotten that mountainbiking is all about the dirt!

Anyway, today I rode with Owen and Gary Fracchia all the way to Pacifica. Yeah, that's not a typo--from Golden Gate Park to Pacifica. We estimated that the ride was 18 miles each way, but don't let the distance fool you. The big-ass mountain between San Francisco and Pacifica makes it harder than your average 35-mile ride. No dirt, just distance and a big-ass hill. I was way too tired after the ride to hit up Golden Gate golf course in the afternoon with Willem.

All in all--it was a pretty sweet weekend. My butt hurts, but I am definitely getting back in shape.

I rode the 20-mile Hawk Hill loop yesterday morning and that was well within my abilities. But this morning I followed it up with a 35-mile loop from Owen O'Donnell's house to the SFO airport and back. I am in some serious pain right now, but they say no pain no gain--I need to get back in shape.

S.F. City Limits

I went on a 35-mile bike ride today around the city of San Francisco. It was a counter-clockwise loop starting at the Ferry Plaza around the edge of the city. The route that we took is outlined on this map. Actually it wasn't that bad, it only took three and a half hours of riding time. We stopped to eat at Westlake so the total time was four hours and twenty minutes. That's a long time to be sitting on the saddle.

Ok, I'm up! Damn, this is extremely early for me since the only seven I know is "PM", but here I am, bright and early. I will bike about 22 miles round trip from my house to Hawk Hill in the Marin Headlands and back. Then I will go to Lake Merced for Dragon Boat Race practice and paddle like a madman for two to three hours. Wish me luck.

Started the day with an 18 mile bike ride from San Bruno to San Mateo which left my butt a little sore and then in the afternoon I went to Lake Merced for dragon boat practice. My firm is a sponsor and participant in the 7th Annual Northern California Dragon Boat Championships. Check out the California Dragon Boat Association (CDBA) for more info.

Bike Ride, Not Bike Fried

Two guys from the company I am auditing, Guidant Corporation, offered to take me on a mountain bike ride today--so I accepted (first mistake). I expected us to go out late afternoon as the Sun was going down, instead they advised me that they are ready to go at 11:00AM. Great!?

This was already looking bad as I saw birds outside sweating, but not wanting to be the party pooper, I said "let's go." By the time we arrived to the foothills near Lake Elsinore it was high noon and the temperature there was much cooler than Temecula--90F instead of 105F--woohoo.

By this time my excitement for the ride was overwhelming--not! I had a borrowed bike from this guy that's like 6ft tall with a huge frame, had a borrowed helmet, no sun block, borrowed sunglasses, and a 16oz. bottle of Gatorade. These two guys both had 90oz. Camelbaks, full racing gear, and a certain look of determination that I certainly was lacking--I was hoping or some wind.

I was informed today that Specialized is out of stock on the Stumpjumper M4 Comp so I will be getting a Stumpjumper M4 Pro as a replacement for my stolen bike instead. Kick Ass!
