Ken & Barbie Eliminated

In this episode, teams made their way from Darwin, Australia, in the middle of the Australian Outback to Bangkok, Thailand. The story of the race was that one of the Hippies, BJ, had no pants or shoes. Yolanda, of the Tokens, was nice enough to give BJ a pair of pants and the hotel lost and found box yielded a pair of flip flops for him. It’s the first time ever that a team member was without shoes, even if for a brief time.

It seemed that all of the teams were bunched up at the airport and on the same flight. This gave the Hippies the opportunity to go to downtown Darwin to beg for cash. When they got back they couldn’t get on the same flight as the other teams. But they managed to get a flight that was to land within 15 minutes of the other teams.

Upon landing in Bangkok, Ken & Barbie had a little breakdown because Ken was in a bad mood and acting pissy because Bangkok looked “shady.” Grow some balls man! Once they got to the bus terminal they decided to ask the guard about where to buy tickets to their destination city instead of asking the people at the ticket booth. The guard told them they couldn’t buy them at that booth and they missed the midnight bus to Lopburi. So dumb!

Adding insult to injury, they decided to go to a hotel to wait out the bus and return for a 5:20AM bus. Mind you, they never spoke with someone at the ticket counter. The Hippies went to the ticket counter at 1:00AM and figured that the next bus was at 4:20AM. They slept at the depot and were on the 4:20AM bus. Ken & Barbie showed up at the depot for the 5:00AM bus, clueless to the fact that they had missed two buses.

The Jocks and the Tokens were enjoying a full four and a half hour lead over the Hippies and a five and a half hour lead over Ken & Barbie. Because of the opening time to the next clue box, the Hippies ended up catching up to the lead pack. At this point it was Ken & Barbie trailing an hour behind the lead pack. The clue was a Fast Forward and a Roadblock. Both the Hippies and the Tokens went for the Fast Forward.

I got to say the fast forward was pretty brutal. Teams needed to eat a full bowl of crickets and grasshoppers. It looked like a full two pounds of bugs in each bowl. Surely locals don’t eat these things a pound at a time. The Tokens bailed immediately, but the Hippies tried to pull it off. The barf buckets that were provided were definitely used. The won this leg even though they started the leg without money, pants or shoes. I have to give them props for that.

I don’t know why I get so much perverse pleasure at seeing Ken & Barbie breakdown. Barbie had a little mini breakdown at the Detour doing the Move It challenge. Once she started breaking pots she became more and more bummed and dropped more pots. It was a pot breaking death spiral that Ken was powerless to stop. They took so long doing this that they were in last place heading into the Pit Stop. And that’s how it ended, with Ken & Barbie eliminated.

Episode Stats and Predictions

Roadblock: Who’s ready for monkey business? One team member needed to create a ceremonial monkey feast for the monkeys of the three spires shrine.

Detour: Move It or Altar It. In move it teams needed to move 72 clay pots from a factory to a dock using only wooden boards. In Altar it, teams needed to manually gold leaf a Buddha at an altar.

Fast Forward: Yes, attempted by the Tokens and the Hippies, won by the Hippies. Teams needed to eat a whole bowl of fried crickets and grasshoppers.

Yield: None.

Pit Stop: Marble Temple, Bangkok, Thailand.

Funniest Moment: BJ saying “It is on like Donkey Kong!” in the preview at the end of the episode.

Smartest Play: The Jocks and the Tokens choosing the Altar It challenge.

Dumbest Play: Ken & Barbie asking the security guard at the bus depot about the tickets instead of the people at the ticket window then going to a hotel instead of waiting at the depot for the next. They were both misinformed and stupid and missed two buses, not one.

Next Team to Be Eliminated: The Hippies.

Pick to Win: The Jocks.

  1. I’m glad to see Ken and Barbie gone as well. I think the hippies will win.
