San Francisco Fog at Sunrise

While the rest of the nation is seeing record high temperatures and basking in summer splendor, San Francisco sits nestled in a blanket of fog from the evening to after sunrise every summer day. The sunrise temperature in San Francisco today was 52°F, 3 degrees colder than the sunrise temperature in Anchorage, Alaska. The Chronicle ran a story on the summer fog today that, although informative, was not a surprise to longtime San Francisco residents. Nevertheless, the map of common fog formations was cool to see. Now, if the sun would only burn off the fog over downtown for a few hours today that would be really nice.

  1. I think that the quote, which is attributed to Mark Twain, says it all.

“The coldest winter I ever saw was the summer I spent in San Francisco.”

That’s why I moved out of the City!

  2. Sorry to burst your bubble, but according to the researchers at PBS, Mark Twain never said this quote.

Additionally, an article written in the Chronicle of Higher Education in 1991 by Kim A. McDonald dispels the myths surrounding this quote. The bibliographic citation of the article is as follows:

McDonald, Kim A., “Many of Mark Twain’s Famed Humorous Sayings Are Found to Have Been Misattributed to Him,” Chronicle of Higher Education (Sept. 4, 1991), A8.

I haven’t been to the library to actually pull the article from an archive and I am not willing to shell out $45 for a subscription to the Chronicle of Higher Education. So until I go to the library to verify this, I’ll just as well assume that Kim McDonald is right.

Still, many people regard it as the “coolest thing Mark Twain never said,” and I’ll have to agree.

  3. You aren’t bursting my bubble. Please note I used the phrase “ATTRIBUTED TO MARK TWAIN.”

I knew of this disagreement and chose my words cafrefully.

You can apologize later, preferably in person.
