Merck was held liable for the death of a 59-year-old marathon runner that was taking the drug Vioxx to treat arthritis. He died of a heart attack. Today, a Texas jury awarded $253.4 million in damages to his widow and opened the floodgates for future litigation against Merck and other pharmaceutical companies.
