Donde esta Jorge?
How many of you have accounts on Where’s George? For those of you who don’t know about Where’s George?, it’s “The Great American Dollar Bill Locator”. Anyone can create an account and enter the serial numbers of various bill denominations into a database. Many mark the bills they enter with the web address for Where’s George? so that the next person can enter the bill once it has been returned to circulation. Where’s George? keeps track of the bills and shows you where your money is going.

I entered my first bill way back in 2000. I got a $1 bill from the coffee shop down the way from the iMind learning hub. I think I ordered a mango smoothie. Regardless, I haven’t entered a bill since…

Until this week… One of my colleagues is a huge Where’s George? user with almost $2500 worth of bills recorded on the site. Once I saw how big he was into this, I had to take it to the next level. I’ve entered a bill each day this week. I even ordered a rubber stamp to print the address on the bills. So, again, I ask, How many of you have accounts?

  1. Jimmy, you must have a lot of time on your hands! Interesting idea though.

  3. Many people have a hobby. Some collect stamps. I follow George. I have entered 2753 Bills as of today and rank 26 in the state of NH.

  4. I just got into it as well…one of those strangely obsessive things that will consume your time day and night if you let it.

I have only entered in about a dozen bills…but at the end of each day I’m trying to mark every bill I come across.

The thing that makes it so engrossing is the use of intermittent reinforcement. For crappy golfers it’s that one shot in twenty that keeps you golfing knowing that the NEXT shot you’re really going to connect on. For Gamblers, it’s getting a mini jackpot once in every 10 or 20 hits. For Monica Lewinski, it was the bone that Clinton would toss her way every couple of weeks or months. And for the Where’s George obsession…it’s knowing that today…yes TODAY…I may see another hit on one of the dollars I entered in.

I’ll keep Georging for a while – I may even buy a stamp just to make it faster. And I’ll always be looking for that next hit that tells me that one of the dollars I entered was logged by someone in another part of the country.

  5. Another avid Georger–I’ll be ranked around 25th in NH when I go there for college this fall. Even though I’m up to usually more than 1 hit a day, you still have days where you get a couple crappy hits (in nearby, boring towns) and then get that one hit in a new state, or from a famous Georger, that makes you, as a Georging friend put it, “Giddy as a schoolboy”.

Check out the site–you just might love it!
