The bad news, an asteroid is heading towards Earth, the good news, it won’t be close to us until March, 2014. Even better news is that there is a 1 in 909,000 chance that it will actually hit our planet–here’s hoping that we don’t beat those odds. Jeez, and I thought that the release of Deep Impact and Armageddon in the same summer was the worst asteroid disaster I would see in my lifetime!

Update: (9/2/2003) After more observations and lots of math, JPL says the asteroid has a 1 in 2.2 million chance of striking the Earth in the next century, which is far below the “background risk” of a catastrophic collision in any given year. False alarm.
